Diminish Pain and Tension with Cupping Therapy and Gua Sha in South Bay and Redondo Beach

In addition to acupuncture, our South Bay clinic has a number of additional bodywork and Traditional Chinese Medicine therapies, such as cupping and gua sha, that can be added to your treatment. Most of our patients use these treatments to address chronic neck and back pain, to speed up illness recovery from colds and flus, to relieve myofascial tension from vigorous workouts, or to improve blood and fluid circulation in areas of tightness. For effective cupping therapy and gua sha treatment, give our clinic in Redondo Beach a call!

Cupping Therapy

In cupping, a flame is used to create a vacuum inside a glass cup, that is quickly placed on the surface of the skin where the pain, tension, or discomfort is located. This process creates a lifting sensation on the skin underneath the cup.

The cup may be stationary, or oil can be applied to the skin and the cup may be moved across a larger area, such as the upper back.

The intensity of the redness or bruising on the local area can be adjusted according to comfort and the condition being treated.

Gua Sha

Gua sha is a Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment in which the skin is scraped with a special tool in short or long strokes which produces redness or flushing on the skin. This technique can increase the flow of blood through the tissue and can provide relief for conditions of myofascial tension or tightness, such as after injury or surgery.

Gua sha is used for many of the same conditions as cupping therapy and can be applied alone or in conjunction with Acupuncture therapy and/or cupping. Redness or light bruising following the gua sha treatment is an expected side effect of this therapy and has a therapeutic effect on the area treated.
